Happy Holidays. I say this only to introduce the topic of discussion, typically I’ll say “Merry Christmas” unless I know the person doesn’t celebrate Christmas, and I mean they legitimately don’t celebrate Christmas by having presents or anything. If you still celebrate the commercial holiday of Christmas you are going to get a Merry Christmas from me and if you don’t like don’t buy, or expect presents. You shouldn’t expect to take part in a holiday’s festivities and get offended if someone says “Merry Christmas” to you.
That said, I’ve never encountered anyone who was aghast that I wished them a Merry Christmas. I’m sure those people are out there, but I have no desire to take them seriously, or to think of them as anything more than a myth perpetrated by conservative news outlets to make closed minded people think there is a conspiracy against Christmas. What I hear far more often is people getting mad about someone saying “Happy Holidays” usually the aforementioned closed minded people who think that there is a conspiracy against Christmas.
Now, I confess to a general ignorance and gullibility, but when I first somebody say “Happy Holidays” I didn’t think “My God, they’re trying to remove Christ from Christmas.” I just thought they were too lazy to say “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.” I think that my thought is closer to the truth than that other thing. It’s also a better way to address a group of ethnically diverse people, so it makes more sense for people on TV to say it. December isn’t just the home of Christmas, unless you’re one of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour comedians your audience probably includes more than WASPs and it legitimately makes sense, to me, to say Happy Holidays.
Anyway, why did I say all that? I don’t know. I was bored and I heard people talking about it and it made me irrationally angry. It’s what sets me off on most diatribes. I just hope nobody talks to me about The Transformer movies.
